 Psychogenic voice disorders

The voice ‚tells’ how we feel. Any dysbalance of the voice may be a reflection of internal emotional or psychological status – and problems. If a psychogenic problem as a primary component continues to affect the voice, this is called psychogenic dysphonia. In severe cases a total voice loss can result – psychogenic aphonia.

In most cases of a psychogenic dysbalance, patients show additional muscular problems in the region around the larynx, which sometimes is seen as globus pharyngis (the old term globus hystericus is definitely incorrect and should therefore not be used anymore).

In our institution we approach all of these aspects and clarify which part of the voice problem may be psychogenic, functional, or organic. We outline individual rehabilitative and theurapeutical options for our clients and patients.
